Philips DVDR3505/37 1080i Upscaling DVD Recorder with Built-In Tuner
Reviews:

starsYou Can Do Much Better
I bought this recorder of DVD several months ago, but returned it because it had bugs. It is a correct product, primarily the same one as a video tape recorder there is 20 years except with a better quality of image and a numerical tuner. The bad news: 1) they cannot employ the best recordable format of DVD time-to shift (DVD-RAM); 2) while the tuner is numerical, the tuner will not produce a signal with high definition for the use with a HDTV HD-loan (as my model going back to 3 years. Moreover, no DVD can record or play behind an image with high definition.) ; 3) it does not have any electronic guide of program to identify or record nearest programs. My council: Do what I. After reference of this and an high-evaluated recorder of Samsung DVD, I engaged with the network of dish and obtained their newer (hard disk) DVR with high definition, the 722-something. The cost was reasonable and the DVR is 20 years more advanced than any recorder of DVD than I realize of. Very easy to employ and can record a quantity of hugh of TV. Really a large product. The direct TV and the TIVO make the similar products, but I think that the network of dish is the best and better value.

starsSuper Performance
After much of various recorders of DVD on the low end of the balance and one dissapointment after others I bought this Philips. I obtained the update of software package of Philips and all large work. The tuner is good quality and it is rather easy to program. If you seek a reliable unit have the price indicated decent it is that!

starsVery Impressed
I have a 32 inch HDTV, and I do all my TV viewing OTA (no cable or satellite). We enjoy watching PBS, and other broadcast stations. But the VCR could not record any of the digital channels. So I started looking for a DVR. My HDTV does not have a video out port, so I could not use a tunerless DVR.

So I bought this DVR mainly because it has a digital tuner, thinking that the quality would not be so good because it does not record in HD like a Tivo. But I was wrong. The quality of recording is so clear, I can't tell a difference between the original HD broadcast and DVD playback.

You can record at different quality settings. The higher the quality of recording, the less stuff you can fit on the DVD, because the higher quality recording takes up more space. At the highest quality setting, you can fit one hour of shows. At the next highest quality setting, you can fit 2 hours. At the next quality setting, you can fit 2.5 hours. And so on and so on all the way to a 6 hour disc capacity.

I recorded snippets of HD broadcast shows such as "CSI" and "Without a Trace" just to test out the DVR, and I must admit, I was impressed. At first, the screen was too dark, but I just had to go into my HDTV's options and adjust the brightness. With my Sony HDTV you can adjust the brightness of each input channel independently of the others (which, by the way, is a very useful feature).

So after I got the brightness up to normal, the quality of the recordings I made was really good. In fact, I couldn't tell any difference between the original show and the playback. Also, I couldn't tell any difference between the highest (1-hour) and second-highest (2-hour) quality settings. They both looked great to me. So I am really impressed with this DVR.

It is pretty slow executing commands and stuff, but that doesn't bother me. I just really like the fact that I can record shows now with such good picture quality.

I think I am going to get a cheaper upconverting DVD player for daily playback, and just use the Philips for recording only. You can get an upconverting DVD player for only a few dollars now (even a region-free one). My HDTV has 2 HDMI inputs, so I can just have each DVD come in on its own HDMI channel. So that seems like a good way to go.

starsGood Recorder
Accept almost all the types of supports, has a good number of devices, DIVX, HDMI with good upscaling the quality of image, and the channels of standard deviation come in open space. This recorder has an integrated tuner of QAM which allows the free reception of the deciphered numerical programming sent "in open space" by your supplier of cable. The instruction manual states only this fact and neither one nor the other does not make the majority of the Web sites. The only one lowers side by it is that in my Comcast sector provides the service of cable and ABC, the CBS, and NBC is on channels 86-431, 85-433, and 86-432. The tuner of this recorder accepts only two digits of the number of canal lateral. Consequently if you have three digits as in my sector you are not likely any to observe or to record any of these stations. The numerical ways that I can obtain enter clearly and the quality of image is A on recordings. If you do not have this problem in your vicinity then it is a large recorder for the price. I upwards finished returning this unit for Panasonic DMREZ27K because of the problem with the secondary canal to two digits.

starsDVD recorder - and player
Recorder of Philips DVDR3505/37 1080i Upscaling DVD with Build-In the tuner - the best price - rather easy to employ - although it takes certain a test and error. The price was excellent

starsDifficult to use
Two problems: 1. The buttons of outside are very small. The feeling of the contact is poor. Noneasy to order and choose the function which you want. 2. The numerical ways seem noncomplete. In my alive sector (Comcast), Sci-Fi is 75-223; The news of FOX is 76-330. This DVDR accepts only two digits of a number of canal lateral. Consequently, no chance to observe my channels of favourite. Magnavox has a similar model in the Wal-Market. A recorder of DVD has the numerical integrated function of tuner. It also makes insert 80GB HDD. The price is $180 around. Unfortunately, the same exit. This unit accepts only the lateral canal with two digits. Both are probably same supplier.

starsExcellent tuner and recorder
I needed a new player of dvd and decided to improve with a tuner to be ready for numerical emissions the next year. The tuner is excellent and I cannot say to you enough to which nice point it is to really see the ball in a play of baseball. The image was so good that I improved with a greater TV. I also like to be able "to attach adhesive tape" in a format clear and crunching. It is completely easy to use the recorder thus I am not sure where others had had problems. I should note that I bought this at the Wal-Market. They in the beginning sold me an article of open-box, that were not sold as thus. (the preceding owner had left a DVD in the player-clue#1). The conjugation of antenna on the first dvd-r was loose, and to change channel was completely slow, 5-10sec. I returned it, and the nine A a speed of change of channel of 3-4 dryness and the entry of antenna functions very well. It remain much of devices which I did not test yet but the timed recordings and the viewing/playback functioned well. For: The excellent tuner for OTA announces, of great recordings numerical, easy to employ, also plays CD' S well, great image, makes it possible to users of OTA to easily commutate between the similar numerical signals or. Against: Not equilize volume thus the ADS are too strong manner, no universal outside, do not remember that times of playback on DVD or CD' S and each viewing must begin beginning.

starsNot bad and a very good price!
At summer received in good condition and very fast delivery. It was easy to install the unit and easy to employ. The quality of image was good and the price was exact.

starsWorth The Bucks
I paid about $120.00 for a refurbished unit and though it was sloppily packed in the box, it works a treat.
It scanned and now receives about 16 digital channels here in our region in South Texas and also picks up all the analog channels too.
It has a great picture and seems easy to use.
I tried recording from one of the digital cannels and played it back and I found it to be very good quality.
It is a little cumbersome to channel surf because it takes about 5 seconds between each channel change but for the price I don't mind.
It came preset on 4.3 letterbox ration but I changed it to 16.9 without any problems and generally I am impressed with the unit.
If you don't have a lot of cash to spare but want a DVD recorder with a digital tuner (plus analog), this is a great unit to buy.
If you need all the bells and whistles, look to pay at least $100.00 more but this works for me just fine.

starsno thanks
The remote is awkward (small buttons, bad arrangement).
It lost the channel setup every time we used it, and it takes about 15 minutes to scan them all back in again.
The letterbox window gets smaller at the top.
We were sent the older model (type 1), even though type 2 has been out for a while.
I returned it (Amazon will pick it up UPS) and switched to Panasonic DMR-EZ17S.

starsWell qualified inexpensive burner
Pros: If you will be playing Divx files with it, the zoom feature offers better options than most. Like that it can record in 2.5 hours. Major plus.

Cons: VERY slow accessing and finalizing discs. Black level for images not very good. Only has Svideo in. HDMI works well, although newer ones use 1080P upscaling.

starsgood features, poor function
I judged two of these players, and they both had the same problem. It is very slow to operate orders of navigation, like the chapter of jump, the FFWD, etc... It obtained to have annoying to await 5-10 literally seconds each time you wanted to go to a different spot on the disc. Other that that, the devices are good. It of the discs on DVD-R/RW and DVD R/RW, and the possibilities of edition make beautiful. But I chose a recorder which is also a good player, thus I obtained Samsung DVD-AR650. Both are at the Wal-Market, which means handsome price, cheap plan prolonged of service/replacement, and 3 months to return it. The discs of Samsung only on DVD-R/RW, thus you must carry out the disc before playing it on another player, but the menus and the posting of front panel are much nicer than Philips, and it plays of the discs without tear.

starsDoes not hold preset info
I was very happy to find what seemed to be a numerical tuner reasonably have the price indicated of OTA with a recorder of DVD. When that functions, that functions very well. BUT. It always does not hold your information of recording of timer. The software package (dated 6/22/07) with the site of Philips was already on the unit which I have. That took for always (felt I had gained a video game) reaching finally information about my machine to see that the software package "difficulty" was already inside and there was no difficulty. I will live with him, but will check the recorder before each recording: (.

starsUpscaling recorder with tuner - Perfect!
The picture is wonderful. The features are terrific. The ease of use is astounding. FYI - I'm a James Bond fan and own a few titles. One of the movie channels had a Bond-a-thon a few days ago, so I decided to put my Philips DVD recorder to the test. I recorded one of the titles that I already own from the movie channel broadcast to my DVR. The next day, I recorded the movie from my DVR to a DVD. I then had my family watch the first 10 minutes from each movie on one of our other DVD players and, based upon picture, sound quality, etc., tell me which one they thought was the store bought version and which one was the recorded version. My wife and all three kids picked my recording over the store bought version of the movie. Truly remarkable. The primary reason that I bought the recorder is to build upon our DVD collection without having to fork over the big $ to buy the movies from the store (the HDMI connection and upconverting were icing on the cake). At $180 for the recorder and about $1 per blank DVD disc, the thing is going to pay for itself with 10 recordings and then it's all gravy from there. Also, I travel a lot and have about 80 hours of programming on my DVR that I never seem to have enough time to watch. Now I'll be able to burn those programs to a DVD and watch them on my laptop when I'm on the road! How awesome is that?!?!?!

Five stars for the Philips DVD recorder - no doubt. I had tried a few other DVD recorders before I found this one (including a tunerless Philips) - for most, I had paid more and received less. For those of you with complex audio/video setups, beware of DVD recorders that don't have a built in tuner. I don't need the tuner for OTA broadcasts, I need it to make my A/V life hassle free. I'm sure glad that I found this baby...

starsPhillips "Best Picture" Award
The DVDR3505/37 Phillips has the best quality of image "of numerical tuner" out of the two other recorders of DVD than I examined with "the numerical tuners" (Panasonic and Samsung). The DVDR3505 Phillips produces a surprisingly clear digital image of OTA on my old box "similar TV of Sanyo of 27 inches" using an antenna of interior. The 3505 Phillips and the 27inch TV are connected "to the made up cables" regular. The digital image resulting from OTA is surprisingly detailed and clear with little or not of "creeping of awkward point". Another important device for me by choosing the DVDR3505 Phillips is that it enables you to choose "pan 4.3
