Seagate FreeAgent Go 160 GB USB External Hard Drive ST901603FGA1E1-RK
Reviews:

starsDrive works fine....software is crap
As a backup drive this device works fine. However, the software isn't worth a cent. Cannot get the Creedo to load properly - sync does not work. I could have easily bought any drive to backup files onto...I wanted something that would sync every time I updated my photo files. Only way to do this with the Seagate FreeAgent Go is to copy and paste...an enormously inconvenient way to update my files everytime I make changes. Software comes pre-installed on drive with no CD. Have to contact Seagate support to get a "recovery" file if software becomes corrupted. Recovery file failed to fix anything!

starsCr@ppy support & software
After 5 attempts with the Seagate tech support to get the software to install and 6 hours later, I gave up. The tech support didn't really seem to know what they were doing and ending causing additional problems and work.

The drive seems to work fine, but I would not have bought this drive knowing the included software would not work. I ended up buy Mobiliti software to get the job done.Seagate FreeAgent Go 160 GB USB External Hard Drive ST901603FGA1E1-RK

starsIt's great
It's great. I had a bunch of things on a G4 Mac that crashed and the people at the Apple store put everything on it and now from my Dell laptop I can get everything. Not sure why people complain about it's Mac capabilities.

starsGreat Drive, Bad Software
The drive is excellent. It is calm; it pulsated calming down and, amber-colored glowing; it is fast; it stores data. Unfortunately that is hardly amazing. Each external HDD these days should do that by resetting (well, possibly that not to calm down, pulsating, amber colored glowing.) The problem is that the software, which comes with the attractive little drive straight stinks. On my XP laptop I am requested to explain to the computer which to do with the drive each time, which he wakes up, which is annoying. Wrong booklets on the drive appear frequently magic in the root (for example some booklets, which live within my music, appear suddenly in the root of the drive, empty of contents and me straight of disturb.) And there is also the problem, which others mentioned: The thing replaces annoying documents, which I deleted from my non removable disk drive assembly. And if I force it, in order to synchronize, I also confronted with endless "it would like width unit to document on the non removable disk drive assembly with the document on the FreeAgent to replace?" or turned around dance of the fate. The sad thing is those, the automatic archiving software to be rather simple should develop. Seagate should have examined it more, before it unfolds it. And although I return frequently to the Seagate place of assembly, no updates were released to the FreeAgent tools. And you not even speak the own archiving software, the Seagate with me about Ceedo, * wish * to attach I...

starsGood, Bad, not terribly Ugly
Buy this if:

All you want to do is store files.

Don't buy this if:

You ever want to safely disconnect it without having to shut down your computer.

You don't mind losing files when the drive stops being recognized (for no apparent reason) by your computer. (FYI, I've had this happen on multiple computers.) I've lost several files because this happened while I was working on them. Seems to be random...but does seem to happen more if you leave a file on the disk open and walk away for an hour or so. I have zero confidence in the thing.

You want to run applications off the drive. Ceedo will not work. It seems that it'll only download apps from the Ceedo site.??? (It appears that Seagate does not utilize the most up-to-date version of the Ceedo software.?????)

Overall...the drive is ok...but does not do what Seagate promises. I bought it thinking I could run my apps from it. No chance. It's somewhat frightening to have a disk like this where I have so little confidence in it...that I'm constantly backing it up.

Again, barely acceptable. In my opinion, not what was claimed by Seagate...and I wish I'd bought something else.

I'm editing this on 2-24-08 to add that I just lost another file becuase the disk stopped working for no reason. I think at this point I'd have to recommend that you absolutely NOT buy this drive. It is too unreliable. It has great potential...but without reliability...it's just an expensive piece of plastic.

starsSeaGate FreeAgent Go...Is Fantastic
Honestly the best external drive I have ever owned...fast, sturdy and reliable. It looks great, performs great and I couldn't be more pleased to have purchased it.

starsVery Good!
Amazing product!
Very fast and little. The unique disadvantage is that need two usb slots for perfect work.

starsExcellent Fast and Ultra Portable External Travel Drive
First of all I love Seagate and in recent years have only bought Seagate. They're indestructible and I've simply had no problems whatsoever with their drives over the past 10 years.

I've always wondered why they stopped making the predecessor of these mini FreeAgent drives - they were small, black and silver, incredibly durable and just looked really cool on my desk ( I have three). And, you could stack them!! I mean in my opinion, they had really nailed the portable drive case/presentation. It had ultimate protection, cooling, design and it oozed the ipod "cool" factor. Oh well, what do I know, I only bought three.

But, I guess they were working on these new FreeAgent ones. Well, I finally bought one of these and have to admit these are really sweet. Half the size of the black and silver ones that I loved and probably half the weight.

I'm really shocked at how small and light these things are. And, they seem extremely rugged as well.

I haven't checked the stats but they seem at least twice as fast as my older black and silver drives portable external drives. And, thankfully they use the same cable so now I have lots of backup cables.

I highly recommend these - you'll be pleasantly surprised if you haven't seen these live. You can always pop into Staples if you want to check them out in person before you buy.

About the size of a deck of cards.

TIP:
Pick up cheap CD cases when you see them on sale for $2 at Target etc - they make great storage cases for mini hard drives and cables - lots of padding built in with all the pages for CDs - works like a charm.

starsGood but be aware
I did not buy this product in August and it am December and I technical problems with the device now had. The first "expenditure", which surprised me that it is that she takes up two USB of slots. This is not a treating circuit breaker for me, but it surprised, since I unite external non removable disk drive assemblies straight one had also seen. I cannot really pay up to attention during the acquisition the white. If you do not have two USB of gates near each other, your connection is quite clumsy. The second "expenditure" was the Ceedo software. I saw the fact that which did it in the first pairs of minutes and did not decide immediately it was for me. I wanted to steer the data relocating and organization, thus uninstalled I her. It did not give problems, which are referred on the software then or now, straight not for me. In order to be free, I do not have synced my non removable disk drive assembly to the external, use I it straight for file and manual supports. This process can cause problems, which are outlined in other reports. The size of the drive, which was connected with the costs, met it a simple choice, which was particularly given the size. It is the noiseless, and small light. They could fit this in a bag easily, if you needed, but it nontheless is very mobile. I carry certainly it with me with the travel, while she regards all my from and from data as work, as well as, up for tons area on my non removable disk drive assembly releasing my films and music. Accessible making data of the drive are quite fast. If it used only one haven USB, it would have five stars.

starsMac portable users, approach with caution
Yup, it happened to me.

My backup Maxtor firewire drive failed during a seemingly innocuous system re-install. 3 days and 2 friends' endless time later, I gave up. An additional week more of scrambling to assemble email attachments, previous CD backups, and file re-creation thankfully left me with most of what was lost.

Thanks to that disaster, I'm now understandably very anal retentive about external backup drives for my Mac portables. Hours of research, purchase/returns at local electronics store...and I now know way too much
about these devices.

The Seagate FreeAgent Go 160GB was one of such devices. It followed attempts at Smartdisk and Western Digital portable USB 2.0, both of which would not mount on any of my portables. Both likewise required a mysterious, and very overpriced external AC adapter for such instances. In sum, the 'intelligent,' dynamic power cycling of the portables didn't pump out enough juice for a lone USB connection sharing data and power over the line.

The FreeAgent Go 160GB seeks to remedy this by requiring two simultaneous USB connections. Unlike its predecessors, Seagate's offering was immediately recognized. Problems is, it became an unwanted houseguest. It never ejected. Even with logouts, restarts, related, the device simply would not disable. A shame, because the thing really is a design masterpiece plus transfers data lightning fast.

To elaborate: Failed ejects mean failed boot and hard drive sectors over time. Simply put, you're messing with power and data literally crossing wires over the same connections. Not recommended for data you can't afford to lose.

In all fairness to Seagate, a similar Hitachi model suffered from the same malady. Three portable USB 2.0 drives and manufacturers later, I've concluded them not a good fit for Mac portable owners.

Problem is, the external hard drive market -- including those powered by AC adapters -- is limited at best. Seagate owns Maxtor. Western Digital and Lacie are notorious for out-of-the-blue hardware failures. Options are limited at best. I ended up (begrudgingly) with a Smartdisk option simply because it wasn't any of the above 4 manufacturers.

For Mac portable owners, 'MacWorld' recommends and reviews various external drives manufactured by smaller companies...but created specifically for Macs. An additional and cost effective option lies in portable drives with enclosures. Still, ensure these enclosures carry intelligent power management to handle laptop environments.

starsEXCELENT HARDWARE, GOOD SHAPE AND EXCELENT CUSTOMER SUPPORT
I BOUGHT NEVERTHELESS THIS, to I HAVENT TEST TOO MUCH ONE, BUT the SECOUND DAY BOUGHT I IT, which I UNITE DOCUMENTS TO SEAGATE H.D. COPIED ONE AND MY COMPUTER CUT SUDENLY off, the FOLLOWING LOST I the DRIVE, WITH the SEAGATE SUPPORT I REFOFORMATED the DRIVE AND FIRST the SOFTWARE, AND FINALY DOWNLOADETE WERE IT BACK AGAIN... THERE WAS an ABORT ON the H. D SOFTWARE, BUT IS LARGE.... I WOULD LIKE STILL ABILITY the DRIVE WITH CEEDO DISTRIBUTING, which HE GREETS STRAIGHT LINES IS

starsPerfect for home, work and travel ...
I spent a pair of hours mobile non removable disk drive assemblies and their marks investigating. After reading off an excellent report in one the PC magazines, I accounted for on the Seagate mark. This model (FreeAgent go to USB 160), comes with software called Ceedo, which tries, you a desk on the way to give - meaning, in the theory, you should be to attach it to each possible PC with a USB gate and use it, while you became at home. Unfortunately software for Ceedo "approved" limited extremely at the moment. If you use InterNet Explorer, you can take it (and your Bookmarks and other attitudes) everywhere. But are not recognized other Microsoft Office of products, and none is any the other software, which I use on a daily basis. In the time this can change, thus, if you do not need the 8gb area of the Ceedo of taking, could you it for one while and hope as improvements regard. Otherwise I strike the Uninstalling it and using of the drive for file forwards (like my original intention). On my laptop the one a yearly entry product (the 1,66 gigahertz duplication processor, 2 GBS RAM), requires the mobile drive is both USB cable to be attached or it does not receive sufficient energy. I stored some plays with high speed graphics and processing requirements. These have fair fine run by the external drive. Entirely, I am quite pleased with the product. Resulting from this experience I invested straight drive external in a Seagate 3,5 USB.

starsGreat Product
The criticisms I have read about this product are really unwarrented. I have travelled thousands of miles and have used this device on many different computers (apple and IBM) with no problems ever. It has been surprisingly durable. Like most devices of this nature it is in your best interest to delete the software that comes with it. They are rarely well written and may be the source of problems for some people. The drive has a great size and weight and the lack of a wall plug is awesome for those who wish to reduce cordage. The device also works well with just one of its two USB ends plugged into my laptop. A few people have complained of speed issues of which I do not understand because for me I have instant (less than a second) access to my data and have never had anykind of delay using any of the different computers I have used. In short, this is a great product.

starsGreat Portable Hard Drive
I bought recently the FreeAgent go 160 with my pro Macbook using to GBS. The non removable disk drive assembly is very small and easy, which forms it perfectly for people on the way. It has also excellent transition speeds, reading many reports and forums, found I a quantity of disorders over the two USB plugs. I spoke with Seagate support and it mentioned that so long, as the "energy plug propels data" above the device and it clicking clay/tone does not give, which comes from the non removable disk drive assembly then the second USB plug is not necessary. Like that probabilities, if you use a relatively new computer, are you should have to use not a second USB gate. Now if you use a pro Macbook and only a USB for the drive it uses gate guarantee that it is the gate on the right side. The USB gate on left starts the non removable disk drive assembly to form and not attach because of the lack to energy a clicking clay/tone. The expenditure is not with the non removable disk drive assembly however with the Macbook pro on the left of USB gate, which was documented, in order energy to lack (you see discussions to Apple). If you look for extreme mobility at a very appropriate price, this non removable disk drive assembly is probably the best choice out there.

starsDon't buy this product
I am returning this product after being directly told by Seagate Technical support that it would not do what was promised on the box and all the advertising ("software that lets you take your desktop environment. . . to go"). I got suspicious when the start-up information gave no details on how to transfer your environment to run e-mail and Internet browsers on other computers with your data and preferences. This was confirmed by Technical Support, who said "the software does not do this" If all you want to do is back-up files, then the drive will work, but if you want the promised added features that make it "FreeAgentGo", then it doesn't.

starsZero problems, easy setup!
I almost always dislike 5 star reviews.
Can anything really be THAT good?
Yup.
When you open the box you'll be greeted with a refreshingly efficient and easy to deal with packaging design. You find clearly labeled pieces and a fold-out instructions sheet that tells you how long it will take to complete the very few steps of setup.

I run an Apple Macbook Pro, and I had this hard drive hooked up and running in 45 seconds, and that includes climbing around under my desk to plug it in.

Seagate got this one right. I've bought several portable hard drives in my time and I can say this is unequivocally the best designed and packaged one I've experienced. Thus far I've had nothing but good experiences with it.

A WARNING, this is still a hard drive. It still has moving parts, it will still fail if you don't treat it with respect. If you fly with this, pack it in with a bunch of clothes. If you're using it, leave it alone. Don't touch it, don't bump it. It's a platter spinning at seven thousand, two hundred revolutions per minute with a read/write head dancing over it's surface magnetically manipulating little bits of metal. You can very easily break this, so be smart.

starsAwesome!
I found this little drive at my local Best Buy for $92 and some change (sorry Amazon) and I love it. I've a rather large music collection and when I would put it on my laptop it almost half of the drive was gone between the OS and my music, not leaving much room for anything else. It's quick enough that I can store my music library on it and just direct Media Player to my music folders. I honestly think that the drive is faster than my internal HDD. It's very compact and very light. It stay remarkably cool regardless of the plastic case (which I was a little apprehensive about. It comes with the USB cable to utilize two USB ports (one for power and data and the other strictly for power). The only "con" to this setup was all the BS software that came on it. I don't like anything that performs tasks "automatically" for you. I like being in control, so I just formatted the drive and did away with all the software so now it's just a big thumb drive (palm drive). It's a great buy even at $128.

starsAwesome
I did not expect much of this product, but I exceeded it my expectations by quite a point in achievement. First its a very smooth Design. I bought it for my desk calculator, until I receive a laptop for university, then use I it for those. Clogs it into my USB carries, and everything was attached and prepared for use in less than thirty seconds. The light on the front side is cool, although, after only some weeks of constant consumption (I leave computers to mine on the nearly whole time), which seems light a point to have colluded. The size is in addition, it is outstanding only over a little more larger than my palm on my hand. This non removable disk drive assembly has to receive hot already let alone warmly, and I store all my plays on it: World of Warcraft/von crew fortress 2/Beben Wars. It keeps never hot independent of which play of the play I. The data transmission rate is finely for me, I attaches the straight plays directly to it. Except the few CONS down, this product is large and I recommends it to everyone, which looks for a relatively cheap external drive. CONS: - very short USB cable, I became guesstimate between 3-4 ", too briefly for my front gates. - takes up 2 USB of slots.

starsVery effective storage
This product is very effective and generous in its capacity. To use is extremely simple. Cannot the people energize, which are, of one of this as part your support draft to buy sufficient.

starsNot everything I hoped for.
This product should be only used as mobile drive, in order to copy documents too. The Seagate central often commodity or CEEDO software freely uses causes unexpected results. In my case Microsoft Office had to be installed again. Let us exceed was been rifle bullet proof before using the Seagates FreeAgent goes. Since a non removable disk drive assembly is it small and calmly and mobile. As device to transport and the documents synchronize to your applications of cores functions it not.

starsfreeagent go in linux
as a linux user it took a bit of work to get this device to work properly, but after a little configuration and deciding to reformat it, it does work perfectly now under ubuntu and is a very convenient portable backup device.

there are a few issues i had with this device, but once i figured out what they were everything was fine and works as it should. first of all, this device requires the use of two usb ports, one for power and one for data+power. i use this device for my laptop backup, and if you try to plug it into a normal usb hub it will NOT work, it will just beep at you. i had to go out and buy a powered usb hub, but once i did it happily worked.

secondly if you use this product in linux, you will have to be careful with your udev and mount settings. the default for this product is ntfs filesystem, i tried for a while the ntfs-progs drivers, which did allow me to both read and write to this device in linux, but later i encountered very strange problems. files and folders were just disappearing for no reason, and the drive would time out after just a few minutes of use. if you use this product in linux i *strongly* recommend you reformat it either to fat32 or ext3 [if you dont have to use it on a windows machine]. i reformatted the device to fat32, then followed some steps from ubuntuforums to change the udev settings, and after that this device worked PERFECTLY! very happy with the results in the end even though it took a little bit of work to get things sorted.

all in all this device is very cool. its slightly annoying that it requires two usb ports, but i suppose that is better than 1 usb and 1 a/c adapter. the device works in linux with a little bit of work, and seagate actually recognise linux as a possibility and offer some support on their website for it. only reason i dont give 5 stars is because of the initial trouble i had using the device, because i was trying it without a powered usb hub. the in box instructions are very vague, although seagate offers a lot of support online, you have to sift through quite a lot to find what you are looking for.

starsWhat happens to your data?
I like really this HDD (Seagate FreeAgent Pro500 GBS USB/eSATA external non removable disk drive assembly ST305004FPA1E2-RK). I tormented surplus of this or the WD, which a trained external HDD would have been bought equivalently and (like apposed straight to a case and to an internal HDD combines). In the end I was won more rueber by the 5jaehrige warranty. I may regulate things in the situation its even however, why one does not do somebody else you her has. I set all my data of 300 GB and deseamed the old drive off. The new drive attached even special system support often commodity. Some days later I turned it back and received a "driver request" from the profit XP. After I had gone through all examinations and elections, I stated that the internal energy was badly attaches. Now for the large question. If I turn it inside for a new drive, I do not receive a brand-new drive, questions posed. On the other hand lose I mean whole illustrations, music, films, etc..... The resumption of the data of a bad HDD is a minimum of $1400 on place of assembly Seagates. In the end I cracked the case and took the drive off. The HDD was fine, but the warranty is empty now. I am from $160, but I can use this 500Gb in another case. Final result: Fair purchase an internal and cling it in your choice of the different case.

starsPerfect product, Perfect timing
I love this product, I don't need to carry my bulk NB everywhere I go. Everything is just as the ad said. Perfect.

starsno encryption software
Per: it seems faster than the other USB of non removable disk drive assemblies, which I have, but that would know fairly its my fantasy. Cons: there is no enclosed coding often commodity. They must code a document at one time, if you wish something security over your data. That is an agreement circuit breaker. I returned the individual part and bought westdigitally mobile drive instead of. The back getting process with JR was painless. Another small expenditure is it takes two USB of gates.

starsDoes too much automatically
If you avoid installing Ceedo and only use this disk's software to do data backups, which is what I bought this USB 2.5 disk for, there is a big problem.

The problem is that the software prevents you from permanently deleting most file types from your system. Once the Seagate software sees a file and copies it to the external disk it will keep restoring it to your computer each time you refresh your backup.

For example if you rearrange your documents into named folders you will soon discover you have the files both as originally organized and as new folders with their own copies.

Seagate discards no photos it has backed up. You can weed all you like but the backup disk still contains the weeds. To preserve the benefit of your weeding you may want to immediately rename the folder. Then Seagate will have your photos stored twice under the two folder names. The old folder with the weeds will reappear on your next backup. If you don't rename the folder, then the weeds will reappear just where you deleted them.

Seagate's help file say it will cover how to "Select your own folders and configure your own sync rules." That hints at having once considered letting you set up rules like "only copy files to the Seagate on `Synchronize' but do not copy files back to the computer."

However all Seagate actually delivered is an "ask me" function. Being asked, file by file about every file you want to back up and then about every file you ever deleted in the past is no fun. The "yes to all" and "no to all" buttons don't help because first you are asked about every individual file to be copied to the Seagate, then you are asked about every file you ever deleted. "Yes to all" doesn't stop until both phases have completed.

Besides Seagate sometimes ignores your "ask me" and just restores all the deleted files.

The only simple way I have found to get past this problem is to go onto the backup drive and delete the no-longer desired files or the whole folder which contains undesired files.

I found it very difficult to safely use the software that is the distinguishing feature of this USB 2.5 disk, at least not for the simple backup purpose I wanted.

The disks themselves are fine. I have both a 120 and a 160 as I didn't immediately notice the backwash of old data.

starsAVOID!!-update-2nd one also defective
Hp is really concert only 150 and my older max gates drive, which are only 4500 U/min, has a faster read scanning rate. Point of price is, differently than its fair o.k. good. Update speed can be connected with the fact that the drive died on the third day. Seagate support is not, return (even after for 4 days only work) is on means costs large. Above each technical support did not give to be given, straight said, in order to return individual part on telephone support after 10 minutes on influence, on Schwaetzchen was capable. 2. Update Seagate was over replacing the disk, but the re-installation disk, only the one approximately hour was long worked on very well, before it also died.

starsGreat On a Mac Book Pro
As soon as you reformat this drive (Mac OS extended (it not) tap you), which functions it wonderfully on a Mac book, the pro is and need only the two USB connections. I am a professional video publisher and a last week in a clamp, which was I in that, a pro HDV project of the locking cut away from this drive to to draw up, and he preformed large. It also does not hurt that Seagate forms very reliable non removable disk drive assemblies.

starsSeagate Go 160 GB
Work pours as additional file out. Credit does not use, which cannot commentate Ceedo function thus those. The formatted capacity is 149GB; MT were taken up only approximately 118 by the Ceedo application so much little effect, if you leave them on the drive. Can be removed, if you did not like to use it. Drive is formatted, in NTFS however can be reformatted FAT32 for use with Linux or Macsystemen. The following case holds the drive and the cable: Small external hp dropblack. It is however very safer a cosy seat and no wasted area. Reliability interests over the WD passport line led me in this direction and they seems like a good choice up to now. Special cable includes also, in order to draw energy of two laptop USB gates. I found that, if I only a used I received energy fluctuation warnings of the USB gate. Before the blockage of the other end into the non removable disk drive assembly, well worked, when I clogged both laptop ends of the cable into the computer.

starsFreeAGent GO 160 USB--_WORKS-SEAGate DOESN'T
I travel for a living and thus wanted a portable HD that I could take with me to use in hotels and also to serve as a back-up of my data in case of a hurricane ( I live in Florida). The FreeAgent go is very small and very attractive and I was impressed upon opening the package. Like MOST electronics the instructions are written by the Japansese and also translated into English by them and are mostly worthless. I inserted the CD that came with the unit and the auto Run feature took over. I allowed it to install on my computer. The lit claims that you can take applications with you, and this might be true, unfortunately they are appilcations that I have NEVER heard of or seen nor is any real explantion given as to what they do or why you would need them ( Most if not all you would never need). The only thing I recognzied is Outlook Express. This would be fine except I use Outlook and there is no way that I can figure to get to OUTLOOK. Now here is where the problem starts, in the small nerely worthless manual that comes with the device, many paragraphs are wasted telling you that SEAGATE is there to help you and all you have to do is call. What a joke, I have called 7 times and have averaged over 15 minutes on hold each time WITH NEVER HAVING Spoken to a human about the Outlook issue. Right now my device is just an expensive USB removable HD for back up. A travelling device to allow you to use other computers while away from home IT AIN'T. Untill SEAGATE fixes their NON-Customer Service Dept, save your money.

starsStrong and stable
I own both the Western Digital and Seagate external hard drives, both 160GB's in size. Really no difference between the two, other than the nice orange light that glows from the side of the Seagate. The Seagate comes with a cable that allows two usb ports to be used when underpowered, and the freeagent software. I have bumped the drive around when picking up my laptop and forgetting the drive was plugged in, (twice). The Seagate took good hits and kept working with no problems.
Great product.

starsOne For The Road
Fantastic little device for all kinds of missions - data backup, working out of two or more locations, working at client's or even the local Kinkos. Its small size fits well in the laptop bag or even a pocket.

Data transfer is fast and the size provides room for most everything.

Second USB connection does not seem to be a problem on most newer devices. Available far below list at multiple sources.

Highly recommended.

starsSilent big and portable
As small hard disks go this one is pretty much top of the line. I also considered getting the Western Digital passport 160 gb but just fell for the looks on this one and nothing else. The glowing orange drive was like a beacon and this one did pretty much the same things that the western digital did and more. I am presently not using Ceedo too actively so really cannot highlight the benefits of that but in the world of big and small this drive delivers the two contrasts equally well. Firstly the small form factor really makes it convenient to carry this with you wherever you wanna go. I have an ultra portable (Dell D410) and a Maxtor 500 GB external hard drive that I used both for my laptop as well as desktop but it was a pain to carry. The hard drive weighed twice as much as my laptop so really a needed a fix for this. I started looking around and both the WD Passport and the Maxtor 160 GB caught my eye. As I was researching these this one was announced and I decided to wait for it, I was a little surprised when on a trip to Singapore right after I saw these drives being sold there (A little more expensive than what Amazon sells these for) and after seeing a demo by the store representative I had to have it. I bought this on the spot even when the WD was a little cheaper as it was really classy to look at. My usual clutter and weight was immediately cut by 90%. The drive is not as fast as some of the reviewers pointed it to be but does fairly well when the amount of data to be copied is not a lot. If ur going to use this for business needs like I do I am pretty sure ur not going to be doing data transfers in access of 10GB at a time and for smaller data transfers this is perfect. Another thing that I like about this is the encryption, you can password protect the entire drive and keep almost anything on it that you don't like to be seen. I noticed that Ceedo works really well with some programs and with some others it's completely useless. After a few tries figuring the program out I let it be and realized that all I needed was a portable hard drive with a lot of space and I have got just that. The documentation around Ceedo and along with the drive could be much better like someone reported below. This is also a quite drive leaving out a very low hum you cannot hear the drive. If ur in the market for a large hard drive in terms of space but still a portable drive then this or the WD passport would be it.

starsNeeds A Case & Use PS/2 USB Adapter For 2nd USB Power
I love this external non removable disk drive assembly as well as the Ceedo program. It functions large at the work and otherwise, where you can get your application with you. Much permits not not authorized application to job, but with these Ceedo application you can attach each possible software, which them (Argo must buy or try it for 45 days) on this drive and application away from the drive run to let practical to like. If you are done, discharge simply the drive and all trace of this application is removed. Not sufficient USB for the 2. Energy for your Aussenhd? Use a PS/2 for the USB adapter, which came with your mouse acquisition. Most mouse comes with this adapter for old PC, which does not have a USB gate. There is no box for this Aussenhd. That the CaseLogic sales it a a little too small for it. It is out like 2CM and it could work, but I do not have acquisition this case, to it examine [ eXternal NON REMOVABLE DISK-DRIVE ASSEMBLY-DROPBLACK FITS SMALL ONE MOBILE ONE of NON REMOVABLE DISK DRIVE ASSEMBLIES (PHDC-1) ]. My other solution was fair to use regular CD briefcase a box of CaseLogic (the nylon, the 12-CDS holds). This case fits perfectly for this non removable disk drive assembly.

starsRobust and reliable
I received one of the first units and use her to each day now for 1 month (around 2 connect/disconnect per day). It required NOT 2 USB of gates, the second USB plug made available for use, only if you clog it in data only a USB gate (for example not propelled USB hub, something gates in some Laptopen). If you use standard gate, use stronger cable (data energy), do not leave others not attached, this are, as I use it. This is not singular the general solution, to this model or to this mark. It is not accommodated in a case of aluminum, and would bend the top side of the housing, when you operate it strongly with your finger. This is perfectly valid technique solution. The following mark are you on a surface observe the wings -- do they bend? Is it any announcement, how body is the surface? I do not carry a leather briefcase and plastics covering width unit Seagate freely for means go, both bend a point, break. If additional preloaded software is not, which you need, delete it. Simply. Try free PortableApps.com, other mobile solutions or none. Drive is practically noiseless, goes to sleeping mode (disk stops to spiders) after time to adjust you (many external drives spiders continuously, which their life shortens), read/letters is very fast. Provide the orange nice and function light much with sides. The drive uses new magnetic vertical air photograph, in order to make the higher capacity available in the physically smaller drive (I could not confirm this, during I Seagate technical data for FreeAgent rows strange find could not). 5 years warranty is large. I it to prefer, a short USB cable see, which was integrated with a case and an additional cable extension, but this is small detail. This excellent product is entire.

starsThe Road Warrior's Best Friend
I travel over 150 days one year and do more to than 100 representations one year. I was washed ashore encountered straight approximately each continent, and loaded. I forced, around PC of a promoter use had not PC entrance for a number of reasons or. This drive cares for everything those problems. Well everything publishes excluded the airline, but it forms it bearable. This drive is somewhat larger as a brombeere, solvent than a Kartenstapeles and substantial 160 concerts. It relieved fast and the software, which comes with it, is phaenomenal. First was uncertain me over the software, but, whom first times I clogged it into a Vorfuehrercomputer and, all mean desk had, which is present for me together with all my programs my data, all necessary I, became I tensely. When I clogged it into hotel a PC, I was converted. If you travel, or even if you wish a straight efficient support between house and office, this drive is I has possessed the best external mobile and I it all in the last years possessed. The only thing that I found a little odd, was a different USB energy plug, which was for only energy. They really do not need it, it seem redundant. I cannot recommend this drive enough. I bought straight for a collegue, which is much road a krieger, since I am, while a gift and it with it in addition thrilled. I recommend strongly this drive. stars2 USB ports
I am not sure you need to use two usb ports. I have been running the drive using only one usb port for power and data. I have another Seagate portable drive that uses the same cable and it only requires the second usb port if the first usb port is not able to power the drive. I tried using a single port assuming that the requirement for the second port on this Seagate drive is due to Seagate not wanting users of this product having to decide if there is enough power to the drive. A single usb port works fine with my IBM laptop for powering the drive and moving data.

stars160 Gig?
First of all I thought that I paid for mobile non removable disk drive assembly 160G. Really its 148G because of the fact that a bundle of Troedel was set inside like Ceedo. An older version of the Seagate of mobile non removable disk drive assembly does not have any of this material and I no problems with it had or, setting programs on it and with them. So can't I explain out, why we Ceedo to need? I bought straight this today's day and plan, in order to store all my illustrations on it. My other mobile HDD has all my plot routines, so that I can take her, everywhere, which I go. Even with the Misten, I must say that Seagate is one of the best, which I had. It is really plug and play. Others, which I had bought, had to be formated and distributed first even tho were indicated, in order to be plugs and play. I like Seagate HDD and with them will remain.

starsneeds TWO USB slots...
I did not buy this, around a mobile drive of the firewire to replace 80gb wished more capacity and the same comfortable mobility am there anything, which are comfortable over its necessity at 2 USB slots and which shift data slower, than the firewire drive replaces it to nice small breakdown thrust on the small kind of packing..., if you read the requirements for Mac OS X, which you miss the point of rifle bullet in the section of the profit XP the necessity at 2 free ports proclaiming. Description Amazon of the product misleads similarily, how completely negelcts the mention of needing of TWO USB gates... boooo Seagate I insulted, which you such clumsy Konnektivitaet offers.

starsIt works fine and looks nice, but it's VERY FLIMSY!
The rating I have given is based on the fact that this drive is extremely
flimsy. I have two of the older-style aluminum Seagate portable drives.
Those are great drives. I bought this one to upgrade to a 160GB model, but
I'll be returning it. You barely need to touch the top of it before the plastic
case bends inward significantly. I can't imagine this thing working for a week
if it was toted around on a regular basis. Seagate has appeared to sacrifice
its characteristic product reliability for flashiness. Also, I really wish that
portable drive manufacturers wouldn't install software like Ceedo and U3
without asking the customer first. These programs are just a nuisance.

starsSo Far, So Good!
I just received this drive today so I can't really comment on the long term durability and stability of the drive but the drive does carry a 5-year warranty so hopefully it will work for a long time.

The drive is basically plug and play on my two XP machines. The only thing to install is the FreeAgent Tools from Seagate and that's about it. This includes power management options on the drive, file encryption and some diagnostics tools. The software installed on the drive itself is called "CEEDO" and it provides a platform to install and launch applications such as Firefox, Bittorrent, Winamp etc. - all within the CEEDO environment so that when you are browsing or downloading stuff on someone else's computer (say your company's), you won't be leaving behind a trail when the drive is unplugged. It is really a good idea and would be great if Daemon Tools can work with CEEDO!

Final thoughts: Hey Seagate, Black (okay, brownish black) is not uber cool...white is also cool. Mac users especially would welcome a White edition to color coordinate with their ipods and Macs.

starsGreat USB harddrive.
When I first thought of buying an external hdd I was worried to buy one without external powersupply. But this one is cool. It works like magic. 5400 rpm hdd but it will take up two of your USB slots. I think it uses two to gather power. The included software is good it will make a My computer like view also. It is named CEEDO. The data transfer rate is quite fast. This is very small and lightweight. When I got the box I thought it might be empty (it is so light). The manual is not that great but enough to get you going.
